A Therapeutic Garden has been designed using guidelines provided by the Consultancy Services Alzheimer’s Australia WA. This garden (also referred to as the courtyard) caters for the needs of those who are suffering memory loss through dementia.
The natural environment can play a crucial role in maintaining the well-being of people living with this disease.
For people with dementia the need to get outside, have somewhere suitable to take a walk, have a rest or get their hands dirty in the soil has been shown to be extremely important as shown by the findings from a plethora of research projects done in the last 20 years.
The following aspects were considered in designing the garden:
Sustainability
Orientation
Accessibility
Socialisation
Meaningful Activity
Reminiscence
Sensory Stimulation
and Safety
